When it comes to modeling and analytics, I believe that there is a three-way disconnect between research in institutions, technology companies and real businesses. When I say real businesses I don’t include social media and other such new age startups. I refer to companies providing tangible services.
Research institutions are still hankering over outdated concepts of machine learning like ANN, simulated annealing, genetic programming etc. Technology companies are primarily focusing on getting people on cloud. I guess that ways they can lock in their clients for a long time. But unfortunately they are focusing only data storage and indexation. On the other hand real companies are struggling to clean their data and integrate data from various sources. They are not able to get any real help from either research institutions or technology companies as these two are not able to appreciate the processional problems faced by companies. There is a strong need for domain experts learning modeling or data scientists gaining domain knowledge.
